BIG HICKORY ISLAND

Located just south of world famous Lovers Key, Big Hickory Island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and back bay mangrove forests on the Lee County coast. There is a huge variety of wildlife that calls this area home, including Dolphins, Manatees, and a variety of birds. Kayak Excursions has a mobile rental location located about 0.3 miles from either end of the island, right on Estero Blvd. Here we offer Kayak and SUP rentals & tours.

Paddling in the area

There are many unique destinations to choose from when you launch from Big Hickory Island. Heading south toward Bonita Beach will take you along a beautiful Mangrove shoreline with little inlets to explore. You’ll be paddling in water mostly less than 4 feet deep and likely wildlife sightings include Dolphins and Manatees. Heading north will take you toward Lovers Key, and eventually Fort Myers Beach. The scenery is similar to the southern route. You can paddle east, into Estero Bay, where you’ll find bird rookeries, oyster bars, and various wildlife. Or you can just paddle to the nearby beach and relax. These are only a few of the great destinations that this location offers within easy paddling distance. There are also many more challenging routes for more adventurous souls.

The Great Calusa Blueway

Big Hickory Island falls along Phase 1 of the Great Calusa Blueway. What’s that you ask? It’s a 190 mile marked Paddling trail through the bays and islands dotting the Lee County Coast. Phase 1 runs all the way from the imperial river near the southern end of Estero Bay to Bunche Beach, where we also happen to have a location. The Great Calusa Blueway is not just for experts, but for novices as well. It can be paddled in short trips ranging from a couple of hours to all day to multiple days.

Hours

We are open 9am-5pm daily, weather permitting. Our last rentals depart at 2pm. During the summer, we highly recommend morning departure times, because afternoon thunderstorms are a frequent occurrence. Reservations are required at this location, whether you’re renting or going on a tour. Our Bunche Beach and Pelican Bay locations offer walk up service if you prefer not to make a reservation, though reservations are still highly recommended at those locations.
